Psalm 93

You Are From All Eternity

God is powerful.  That's a three word summary of this very short Psalm, which in itself, is a very short summary of the vast wonders of God's limitless power.  I am sure that the writer of this Psalm could have written 500 verses, instead of 5, all expounding on God's power.  How can one person possibly attempt to list all of the wonders of God?  Maybe a 5 verse psalm is the best way to approach it.

Instead of just making a list of all of God's majesty, I like that we have only one thing to compare Him to.  The author makes the metaphor that God's power is like the sea; powerful, timeless, and vast.  A man in modern times can stand alone and look out over the sea, and it will affect him the same way as it did a man in ancient Judea.  Today, just as then, the sea stretches forever, touching all corners of the world, and making an impact on the lives of every living creature on the planet.  It is a very humbling experience to stand besides the sea, and realize just how small you are compared to the entirety of creation.

Still, do we really need another short psalm like this?  Something that just reminds us that God is all powerful?  I mean, we already know that right?  My answer is; why not another reminder?  In my own life, the biggest obstacle between me and God is my own sense of self-importance.  If I think that I am powerful and important, that means God becomes less powerful and important in my life.  A person like me needs reminders of God's power.  That way, it's like I am standing besides the sea, I realize how small I really am.  I can be reminded of the beauty and majesty of His power.

God loves us, and he loves us forever.  Another reminder of this doesn't hurt.

The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty;
    the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;
    indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
Your throne was established long ago;
    you are from all eternity.
The seas have lifted up, Lord,
    the seas have lifted up their voice;
    the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
    mightier than the breakers of the sea—
    the Lord on high is mighty.
Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
    holiness adorns your house
    for endless days.
